All precious metals are used in the manufacturing of jewelry, including gold, silver, platinum, rhodium, palladium, iridium and ruthenium.  When manufacturing gold jewelry, silver or palladium, along with copper and tin, all can be used as alloyed metals.  When making platinum jewelry, it’s typically alloyed with iridium or ruthenium.  When a jeweler makes something out of silver, platinum or white gold, it would have a rhodium finish to give it a long lasting shine and pretty, finished look.  Our precious metal refiners work with you, the jeweler, to give you top dollar for your alloyed metals everyday! With our top of the line testing techniques, we price your precious and alloyed metals by using chemistry and the most current market values to ensure we give you the best possible price.

Precious Metal Clay & Jewelers

Jewelers can now use Precious Metal Clay (PMC), a product for making .999 pieces of gold and silver jewelry. PMC is very useful in creating a pure piece of gold or silver jewelry. It’s most often used with silver to achieve an enameled finish. Those seeking a richer color with a gold piece would turn to gold PMC.

Jewelers are referred to by many names, the most common of which being bench jeweler, goldsmith, silversmith, jewelry designer, lapidary, and watchmaker. Processes used by jewelers include casting (centrifugal, lost-wax, vacuum), enameling, engraving, filigree, metal clay, polishing, soldering, stone setting and wire wrapping.  The main tools used in the jewelry trade are a file, draw plate, hammer, mandrel and pliers.  If you or someone you know uses these products, we may want to do business with you! The History

The human race has always been infatuated with jewelry. For centuries, it has been referred to as an ornament for personal beauty. The word jewelry came from the Latin word jocale, the term used by Cro-Magnons (ancestors of Homo Sapiens) to refer to the items they wore 40,000 years ago.  These items included, but were not limited to, necklaces and bracelets made of bone, teeth and stone. However, the oldest pieces were actually beads made from shells 100,000 years ago. Over time, jewelry evolved along with the society that would wear it, changing in its inherent nature of materials and the way in which it was crafted.

In Ancient Egypt, gold and silver jewelry were first made around 3100 BC. The Egyptians adored the shine, rarity, and workability of this shiny yellow metal. They acquired an abundance of gold from the deserts of Africa, and gold became a social symbol in Ancient Egypt. Those that could afford this lavish lifestyle not only showed it off during life, they continued to bathe in their riches in the after life.

The Greeks were the next society to use gold as a social symbol. Most of the jewelry designed by Ancient Greeks was made out of gold, silver, ivory, gems, bronze and clay. Eventually, the Greeks embraced the Asian way of designing jewelry. This came to light after Alexander’s conquests. The most common piece of jewelry from ancient Rome was the brooch, used to keep clothing together.

Approximately 2000 years ago, the Greeks would import precious stones from Sri Lanka and India including diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds.

The Italians were the first group to craft gold in a way most similar to modern day jewelry.  From crude gold, they would design clasps, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. The Byzantine Empire were fond of ornaments (jewelry) with an abundance of of gems. Generally, rich women of this time would drape themselves in jewelry from head to toe, while the men would remain much more conservative and limit themselves to a signet ring.

There has been many different reasons behind donning jewelery over the centuries. Dating back to ancient times, various items were worn to keep evil spirits away.  As time went on, precious metals became more abundant and jewelry evolved into a social symbol. It was used to pay dowries, as currency for trading goods, and has communicated status symbols as to who is in the upper echelon of society. To this day, jewelry can be a precursor for where one falls on the hierarchy of social status.

The history of jewelry is a rich one. When it comes to your own precious metals, put your trust in a company that has its roots in that history. AU Precious Metals is a second generation family owned business. Our team of experts wants to help you get the most money for your unwanted precious metals.
